Years after nearly dying during childbirth, Serena Williams shared how she managed during her second C-section.

In 2018, Serena Williams talked about her very difficult experience giving birth for the first time. In a heartfelt essay for CNN, she shared that she nearly died while having her daughter, Olympia, with her husband, Alexis Ohanian.

Olympia was safely born through an emergency C-section, but shortly after, Serena suffered a pulmonary embolism, which is when a blood clot blocks one or more arteries in the lungs. Because she had this issue before, she was very scared. When she started having trouble breathing, she immediately told the nurses.

This led to many health problems that she was lucky to survive. First, her C-section wound opened up because she was coughing a lot from the embolism. She had to go back into surgery, where doctors found a large swelling of clotted blood in her abdomen. Then, she had another procedure to stop clots from reaching her lungs. After all this, when she finally got home, she had to spend her first six weeks as a mother resting in bed.
