John Mulaney is focusing on new career opportunities outside of comedy

John Mulaney has taken a new approach to his career, expressing his openness to various opportunities, including additional talk shows and the coveted role of hosting the Oscars.

In an interview with IndieWireMulaney, 41, has acknowledged a shift in perspective, shedding rigid boundaries and embracing the evolving landscape of the entertainment industry.

“I used to have strong opinions: ‘I’ll only do this’ or ‘I’ll never do that.’ And “I don’t want to be pigeonholed like that.” And I think both myself and the whole entertainment business have changed so much,” the comedian said.

“I mean, there are people who are one hundred percent hosting a game show every week and we have no idea — except for the millions of people who watch them.”

In partnership with Netflix It’s a Joke FestivalMulaney produced a quirky talk show called John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s In LAwhich hosted six nights of live programming on the streaming service last month.

“I’m very much now on instinct and what’s happening in the moment,” he said this week, saying Everybody’s In LA came together through instinct. “I really don’t have a strong principled view of doing it again. It was so much fun, you know?’

On social media, Mulaney’s hosting of the Oscars has garnered support from those scrutinizing his choices as a talk show host.

Momentum for the Oscar-nominated host was further boosted by his successful run as host of the Governor’s Academy Awards in January, where his witty monologue garnered a lot of attention online and produced viral moments.

In 2017 and 2018, Mulaney also co-hosted the Film Independent Spirit Awards alongside Nick Kroll. However, he has never served as an Oscar host.
