A US Air Force pilot named Scott Clayton, while on a rescue mission in Somalia, meets a sick black girl named Ion who is in desperate need of medical attention. Moved by her plight, Scott adopts Ion and brings her to America for treatment.

Twenty years later, Ion, who had lost her family and was susceptible to other illnesses due to her weakened state, repays Scott by becoming a successful student and forming a strong bond with his daughter Cassie.
