Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, faced humiliation when Vogue magazine revealed that the pearl and diamond earrings she wore at the late Queen’s State Funeral were not authentic.
Last year, amidst the somber atmosphere at Westminster Abbey, Meghan paid her respects to the Majesty by donning an all-black ensemble, complete with a black hat and what appeared to be the same pair of earrings gifted to her by Queen Elizabeth in 2018.
According to tabloids, Queen Elizabeth presented these elegant earrings to her granddaughter-in-law just before their first solo outing together in Cheshire, a month after Meghan married Prince Harry.
The delicate studs were believed to be a smaller version of one of the Queen’s favorite styles.
Meghan also wore them during the procession from Buckingham Palace to the Palace of Westminster, adhering to royal mourning protocol by wearing head-to-toe black.
However, nearly a year later, jewelry experts have confirmed that the earrings Meghan wore at the Queen’s funeral were not adorned with real pearls.
In the latest issue of Vogue, these experts conducted an analysis, revealing that just like the tiara Meghan previously wore to a wedding, these earrings were also replicas.
In fact, they were £50 gift shop imitations, not the genuine Queen Mary’s button earrings bestowed by the Queen herself.
The jewelry expert who wrote the analysis expressed skepticism about Meghan being gifted any items belonging to Queen Mary.
Noting the resemblance between the earrings Meghan wore and those available on a gift site described as replicas of Queen Mary’s button earrings, the expert stated their belief that the royal family did not present Meghan with any authentic heirlooms, regardless of their significance.
It was emphasized that everything associated with Queen Mary is now part of the royal collection, making it impossible for such items to be personally gifted as they belong to the crown.
While Meghan does possess some of Princess Diana’s jewels, she is reportedly forbidden from wearing any historic pieces from the royal family.
This ban supposedly covers diamond necklaces, brooches, and tiaras, and has been approved by the Queen and supported by Prince William.
In contrast, Princess Catherine has been seen wearing pieces from the collection on multiple occasions, including the Cambridge Lovers Knot Tiara designed by Queen Mary, which became one of Diana’s signature tiaras.
This incident is not the first time Meghan has allegedly missed out on royal jewelry.
It seems that she is not granted access to the historic family treasures, while other members of the royal family, such as Catherine, Camilla, and Sophie, can borrow crown jewels for events but must return them afterward.
The royal family can only give away personal jewelry or purchase new pieces.
Queen Mary possessed numerous private jewels, both received as gifts and acquired after her passing.
However, it is doubtful that these particular earrings belonged to her, as they are considered too small.
The revelation of Meghan’s counterfeit earrings has undoubtedly caused embarrassment and raised questions about the authenticity of her jewelry collection.
