In a move that could potentially reshape the British monarchy, King Charles is reportedly planning to make changes to the law to prevent non-working royals from being councillors of state.

Under the new plans, Prince Andrew, Prince Harry, and Princess Beatrice would all become ineligible to stand in for the monarch.

Currently, the 1937 Regency Act stipulates that the spouse of a monarch and the four adults next in line to the throne can act as councillors of state, filling in for the monarch in case of indisposition.

During Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, this role was fulfilled by the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, the Duke of Sussex, the Duke of York, and the Duke of Edinburgh before his passing.

However, according to the Telegraph, King Charles wants to amend the law so that only working members of the royal family can become councillors.

This proposed change would strip Andrew, Harry, and Beatrice of their councillor titles.

It is believed that the King recognizes the incongruity of having three non-working royals holding a position that entails constitutional duties.

Various commentators have previously called on Buckingham Palace to request a change in the law, which can only be enacted by the Houses of Parliament.

Such a change would relieve Andrew and Harry of their councillor roles.

Charles is expected to take swift action in pursuing the necessary steps to amend the law.

If the law is indeed changed, it is likely that Prince Edward and Princess Anne, two prominent working royals, would be elevated to the position of councillors of the King.

Previously, the Dukes of York and Sussex served as Queen Elizabeth II’s councillors, along with Prince William and a former Prince of Wales.

However, with Charles’s accession to the throne, Queen Camilla and Princess Beatrice were also included in this group.

The potential implications of this move by King Charles have sparked much speculation.

Will his decision bring a new light to the monarchy?

Only time will tell.
