A nap with a mother and her child turned tragic.
On November 9 in Oregon, 5-year-old Joshua James McCoy and his mom went down for a nap at 1 p.m. But when the mom woke up at 5:30 p.m., she found Joshua was missing.
The Coos County Sheriff’s Office said Joshua, who had autism, was reported missing at 6:27 p.m.
Emergency responders arrived and tried to track Joshua using his cell phone. However, the phone signal didn’t give any helpful information to find him.
On Sunday, November 10, deputies searched the property where Joshua and his mom had taken their nap, as well as the nearby areas.
Many volunteers from Coos County Search and Rescue, including K9 units, ground searchers, and drone operators, joined the deputies to help find the boy.
They even drained a pond in the area, and several members of local fire departments came to assist as well.
The search for Joshua ended tragically on Wednesday, November 13, when he was found dead around 12:30 p.m.
The Coos County Sheriff’s Office released a statement, saying, “It is with immense sadness that we have to report that missing Joshua McCoy has been found deceased.”
Joshua’s body was found about 1.6 miles from his home, and the cause of his death is still being investigated.
The sheriff’s office said the search was thorough and thanked everyone who helped. They also expressed gratitude for the community support, including meals provided for the volunteers. Many departments and agencies joined the search, including Homeland Security, the FBI, and several local police and fire departments.
