In her upcoming memoir, Melania Trump strongly supports abortion rights, which is very different from her husband’s views and those of the Republican Party.
According to an early copy of her book reviewed by The Guardian, Melania believes it’s crucial for women to have the right to make their own decisions about having children without government interference. She argues that limiting a woman’s choice to end an unwanted pregnancy takes away her control over her own body.
On Thursday, she also shared a video on social media discussing her beliefs about abortion rights. In the video, she says, “There’s no compromise when it comes to this important right that all women have: individual freedom.” She asks, “What does ‘my body, my choice’ really mean?”
Melania Trump’s book recognizes that some people may need to make decisions about abortion in very difficult situations, like rape, incest, or serious medical issues with the fetus. However, she also supports access to abortion later in pregnancy, even though her husband has often criticized and misrepresented this view as extreme or “radical” among Democrats.
She writes:
It’s important to understand that most abortions done later in pregnancy happen because of serious problems with the fetus that could lead to death or stillbirth, and sometimes even put the mother’s life at risk. These situations are very rare and usually happen after the woman has talked a lot with her doctor. As a community, we should support these sensible guidelines. Timing is really important in these cases.
Melania Trump’s support for abortion rights is surprising because it goes against her party’s beliefs, especially since her husband has played a major role in reducing the rights she believes are important for women.
The timing of her statement is also interesting. She didn’t speak out about being pro-abortion when Roe v. Wade was overturned or when Republican lawmakers put strict abortion bans in place that have led to unnecessary deaths and forced women to go to other states for care. Instead, her strong belief in abortion rights comes just before an important election, as Republicans are trying to change their extreme views on abortion. Plus, she’s promoting her memoir, which costs over $40.
