The whole disaster happened during the Christmas party at my mother-in-law’s house. Every year we celebrate Christmas with the whole family. Last year we had a gathering at my mother-in-law’s house and the whole house was decorated with twinkling lights. We had a good time and finally it was time for gifts. Everyone was looking forward to their gifts, and I carefully selected all the gifts for each family member. But I didn’t even imagine that my chosen gift for my mother-in-law wouldn’t suit her at all.
When the moment came when my mother-in-law had to unpack her gift, our mood changed. There was silence in the room and suddenly everyone heard the mother-in-law scream. I was shocked when she started crying and screaming that I ruined her Christmas. I couldn’t understand what was happening. My gift to her was a purple silk scarf that I spent $900 on.
My mother-in-law clutched the scarf in her hands and cried.
I finally dared to ask what was happening to her and why my chosen gift caused such a reaction. She finally replied that all the gifts she received were of poor quality and turned out to be cheap. She said she expected more from her children.
With all this, she was disappointed in me, saying that I was also a woman and should have known perfectly well what to buy for her instead of this ugly-colored scarf. I didn’t understand whether it was really the color of the scarf.
The whole holiday turned into a disaster and this Christmas will forever remain in our memory. Finally, my husband and I decided to leave my mother-in-law’s house, and while we were driving home, I kept thinking about what was happening.
