Princess Charlotte Makes History as First Female Royal to Retain Succession Rank

Princess Charlotte, the daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, has made history by becoming the first female royal to benefit from a change in the succession law.

At just 2 years old, Charlotte retained her position as 4th in line to the throne after the birth of her younger brother, Prince Louis, in April 2018.

This change in the law ensures that girls will not be overtaken by any future younger brothers, marking a significant departure from the previous 300-year-old rule.

The decision to update the UK succession laws was unanimously approved at the Commonwealth Summit in Australia back in 2011.

It was then implemented ahead of the birth of Prince George in 2013, allowing a first-born daughter of Prince William and Kate to take precedence over any younger brothers.

This move aimed to promote gender equality and bring the monarchy into the modern era.

Previously, the old succession law stated that only the first-born son of the king or queen could inherit the throne, with titles passing to daughters only in the absence of sons.

However, this law only applied to those born after October 28th, 2011, meaning that older female royals such as Princess Anne and Lady Louise Windsor missed out on this significant change.

Princess Anne, who recently celebrated her 72nd birthday, is much further down the line of succession to her two younger brothers, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

As she was born prior to the new law coming into effect, she currently holds the 16th position in the line of succession.

Similarly, Lady Louise Windsor, the only daughter of Prince Edward, was overtaken by her younger brother, James Viscount Severn, due to her birth date in November 2003.

If the updated succession law had been in place in the 1950s, Anne’s children, Peter and Zara, who do not hold HRH titles, would have been closer to the throne than Prince Andrew’s two daughters.

However, it is important to note that the gender equal line of succession does not apply to Princess Anne.

According to expert Marlene Koeing, Charlotte will never be pushed down the royal line of succession due to this change in the law.

However, it remains to be seen if she will eventually overtake her uncle, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, in the line of succession.

It is also uncertain whether Princess Diana’s niece, Lady Kitty Spencer, has any chance of entering the royal succession.
